New York Man Tired Of Waiting For Social Security Disability Benefits Takes Action

Untitled design (1)

Government programs are known for their delays, and Social Security Disability is no exception. Many  applicants are denied the first time around. They file appeals, but never hear back. They keep getting excuses as to why their claims are not yet approved.

One New York man was tired of this song and dance and decided to take action. He applied for Social Security Disability in 2014 and still had not received his first check four years later. He got tired of waiting and tried to get help. He called Social Security, his congressman and his lawyer.

He was told that his check was lost or misdirected. The terminally ill man finally contacted Call 4 Action and was told he will receive his first benefits check any day now. The man does not have much longer to live, but still wanted to receive a check soon so he can make the most of what life he has left.

Like many applicants, the man was denied Social Security Disability benefits the first time around when he applied in 2014. However, he was approved the following year. He was expecting to receive his benefits, along with his back pay, in October 2015. That never happened. Supposedly, Social Security put that money into an account that never existed.

Benefits accrue from the date of disability, so the man has four years’ worth of benefits coming to him—a five-figure amount. The man has not been paid yet, but his lawyer has.

Who Qualifies for Social Security Disability Benefits?

A person can receive Social Security Disability benefits if they are considered to be completely disabled under the Social Security Administration’s definition, which may differ from a doctor’s definition. You must be completely unable to perform any previous work and deemed incapable of adjusting to other work that is available to you based on your physical and mental capabilities.

You also need to meet certain work requirements. These vary depending on your age, but for the most part, you must have worked for at least five of the past 10 years.

Learn More About Social Security Disability Benefits

Social Security Disability benefits were created to help those who are disabled or have terminal illnesses. Unfortunately, though, many do not get the help they so desperately need. These people are physically unable to work, so without these benefits, they could face bankruptcy and lose their home.
