Man Killed After Being Trapped In Machine

Papermill

Nobody wants to die at work. Not many people expect to, but it happens.

Sadly, a New York man was killed while working at a paper company. The 42-year-old man was killed after he was trapped in a compactor on September 18.

The Milton man became trapped in the machine while working at Cottrell Paper on Rock City Road. Employees of the company were able to remove the man from the compactor. First responders from Rock City Falls Fire Department and Community Emergency Medical Services performed life-saving measures on the man, but were unable to revive him. He died at the accident scene.

New York State Police also responded to the scene. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating the case.

Fatalities in Industrial Environments

Industrial deaths are caused by many factors, such as the following:

  • Machinery accidents. Heavy machinery such as forklifts, cranes, conveyor belts, and factory equipment can cause injuries or death if they malfunction or are operated improperly. Machine entanglement, lack of machine guards, and mechanical failures are significant hazards.
  • Falls. Falls from heights, such as scaffolding, ladders, roofs, or platforms, are a leading cause of industrial fatalities. Lack of proper fall protection equipment often contributes to these accidents.
  • Struck-by incidents. Workers can be struck by moving vehicles, falling objects, or flying debris. In industrial settings, this often occurs when vehicles like forklifts or cranes are in motion, or when unsecured objects fall from heights.
  • Contact with live electrical wiring, power lines, or faulty electrical equipment can cause fatal electrocution. Inadequate insulation, unmarked hazards, or improper lockout/tagout procedures increase these risks.
  • Confined spaces. Working in confined or poorly ventilated spaces, such as tanks, silos, or underground areas, can lead to fatalities due to toxic gas exposure, oxygen deprivation, or entrapment.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances. Workers exposed to dangerous chemicals, toxic fumes, or radiation can suffer from long-term health issues or immediate fatal reactions. This includes exposure to asbestos, solvents, or corrosive materials without proper protective equipment.
  • Fires and explosions. Flammable materials, gasses, or chemicals in industrial environments can ignite, causing deadly fires or explosions. Poor handling, lack of fire safety measures, and malfunctioning equipment can lead to such incidents.
  • Collapse or structural failures. Building or scaffolding collapses due to structural weakness, overloading, or poor construction practices can result in fatal accidents. This also includes trench collapses in construction settings.
