Man’s Social Security Disability Benefits Granted, Then Suddenly Ceased

A Utah man who was once approved for benefits suddenly saw them disappear. He has tried for many years to get them approved again, but to no avail. In the meantime, the man can barely take care of himself. He suffers from constant back pain, has lost everything he owned and is watching his marriage fail.

The ordeal started 17 years ago, when the man began having back pain due to a collapsed disc. He had lower back surgery to fix the issue and his problems only got worse. He can stand for only 15 minutes at the most. He had several surgeries since then, but his back problems have not gotten any better. About 10 years ago, he was forced to quit his job as a welder.

He applied for Medicaid benefits and was approved. The State of Utah agreed that the man could not work based on his medical condition.

That all changes a few years ago. The man’s benefits were suddenly denied. The Social Security Administration (SSA) claimed that the man was not eligible for benefits, and the State of Utah had to comply with the SSA. Despite two appeals and evidence from three doctors claiming that the man is truly disabled, the benefits have still been denied.

The man wants to work, but he simply cannot due to his disability.  His doctors agree he cannot work. At one time, even the State of Utah felt he could not work. So why has the man been denied his benefits?

Getting answers from the SSA was not easy. It took four months of back-and-forth emails to finally get some information about the reason for the man’s denial. While it is clear the man cannot do his old job as a welder, the SSA believes that the man can do other types of work. However, when asked what types of work the man could do, the SSA did not respond.

The man is scheduled for another surgery to fuse his spine. His medical problems are not getting better, and his financial problems are getting worse every day.  The bills continue to come in, but he has no money to pay them. The ordeal has been a nightmare.
